WHY IT MATTERS

Blood sugar is about more than cutting sugar.

Glucose levels are influenced by the amount and type of carbohydrates you eat, your overall meal pattern, physical activity, sleep, medications and other factors. You do not have to eliminate all carbohydrates or give up favorite foods to make meaningful nutrition changes. The most useful approach is one that you can maintain.

Understanding A1C, simply

A1C is a blood test that reflects average blood glucose over roughly three months. In many nonpregnant adults, an A1C from 5.7% through 6.4% falls in the prediabetes range. A clinician interprets the result in the context of your health, and some conditions can affect A1C accuracy.

If you have insulin resistance, your body’s cells do not respond to insulin as effectively as they should. Your care team may use blood testing and health history to understand your risk. Nutrition counseling can support your care, but cannot replace diagnosis or medication management by your clinician.

What personalized support can look like

  1. Reviewing your meal routine, preferences, medications and the goals set with your care team
  2. Finding realistic portions and carbohydrate balance, rather than banning whole food groups
  3. Building meals with fiber-rich foods, vegetables, protein and enjoyable cultural staples
  4. Checking in on habits, barriers and progress with adjustments that work for you
Nutrition counseling is individualized and educational. It is not emergency care or a substitute for diagnosis, prescribed treatment, or advice from your medical team.

YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Good to know
before you start.

Do I need to lose weight to improve my blood sugar?

Not always. Nutrition, movement, sleep and medication management can matter even when weight loss is not your goal. We tailor the approach to your personal health situation.

Can I still eat rice, bread, plantains or traditional meals?

Yes. We work on portions, food combinations, fiber and consistency. There is rarely a need to abandon familiar foods entirely.

Is nutrition counseling a substitute for diabetes treatment?

No. Angela provides nutrition counseling and collaborates with your medical care; diagnosis and prescriptions remain with your licensed treating clinician.
